Last week Dub and I drove to Winnipeg to visit his parents. I have to say, Winnipeg is a place I never think about, but it's actually a really nice city! The streets are all tree-lined with nice big leafy trees, and the downtown is really nice with the rivers running through it. I also have to say, that, Saskatchewan as a whole, friggin' blows! We drove for two hours trying to find a place to eat, and spent half a tank of gas looking for a gas station. Saskatoon did seem like a pretty city, but the only cool thing about driving through Saskatchewan, was driving past this town... Afghanistan or Canada?
Here are pictures from Winnipeg. This is The Forks in downtown. It's a really nice park, with trails along the river, and a cool telescope thing that I didn't get a picture of.
Another picture of The Forks. This is the needle bridge thing. There's a restaurant on it that hangs out over the river called the Salisbury House. We figured it sounded like a nice steak place, and decided to take Dub's mom out for a fancy dinner. This place turned out to be a 50's style diner with a motorcycle hanging from the ceiling. It also just so happened to be 75 cent Tuesday!
Portage and Main. This street corner claims to be the windiest in Canada. Gotta say, not so windy. I'm sure I was just there on a calm day. But I'd give windiest corner in Canada to the corner of Tower and Tower field.
Dub and I went with his parents to A Maze in Corn. This is a 10 acre corn maze with a scavenger hunt to complete. It was girls vs. guys. The guys won, but they didn't stick to the maze trail, and Dub could see over most of the corn, so their victory doesn't really count. I'm sure this is the fattest racoon in the world! We went to the Assiniboine Park Zoo, which apparently has the second largest collection of animals in Canada, and this racoon managed to get off the grassy area, and was too fat to get back up. So it is now doomed to circle the grassy area in this cement ditch for the rest of it's life. Or at least until a zoo person helps it back up.
These are some fish at the zoo. I just really like this picture - I think it's background worthy.
So that's a summary of our trip to Winnipeg. Definately worth visiting during a drive across Canada. |
